Local Area Information

Northumberland really is England's hidden kingdom, with beautiful and historic places to explore from the stunning unspoilt coastline and the spectacular Northumberland National Park to scores of intriguing castles and country houses to visit.  From tranquil countryside and pretty villages to vibrant market towns and the shopping and cultural destination of Newcastle Gateshead, Northumberland has something for everyone.

East Bickerton is on the edge of the Northumberland National Park which offers the opportunity for long (or short) walks in totally unspoilt countryside. Simonside Forest is a few minutes away by car or a walk of about half an hour if you prefer. The river Coquet and Caistron nature reserve are a few minutes walk over the fields and we can offer two rods for fishing the river.

Cragside House, famous for being the first house in the world to be powered by hydro electricity, and Rothbury, our nearest village, are approximately seven miles away. The more adventurous visitor can explore the county by bicycle which can be hired in Rothbury.

Kielder Forest and Observatory are approximately a half hour drive away. And the golden unspoilt beaches of Northumberland are within easy reach.

Among the countless Northumbrian castles is Alnwick Castle, or Hogwarts to Harry Potter fans, which is less than a thirty minute drive away. Alnwick also has one of the the largest secondhand book shops in the country - Barter Books.

The historic market town of Morpeth is also within easy reach.

There are regular boat trips from the small fishing village of Seahouses to the Farne Islands, most famous for the Puffins and Seals but also boasts large colonies of many other sea birds during the breeding season.
